There is not a dropped kerb, let alone proper traffic merging infrastructure; not even simple signage.

The northern stub end of Reading Road (in Chineham) again provides a narrow footpath link through to the A33.

A key destination of Route 1, before reaching Chineham, is the shopping complex containing then, Lidl, Go Outdoors, and recently, The Range. A very expensive stairway and ramp was constructed to aid pedestrians and cyclists.

Having once crossed by the Pelican signal system, the access to the anchor store, Lidl, becomes tortuous for pedestrians and a complete dog’s breakfast for cyclists.

One then reaches Crockford Lane. One can choose to take a significant detour and cycle up Crockford Lane to the two-stage Toucan crossing and then cycle back towards the roundabout

…. there is absolutely no provision for cyclists to pass under the old railway bridge on the de-regulated southern stump of Reading Road.

Once under the railway bridge, one must decide whether one is cycling up Hanmore Road….

Once under the railway bridge, one must decide whether one is cycling up Hanmore Road…. …..or continuing along Reading Road (Route 1).

Route 1, now presents the challenge of a very narrow pathway, not designed for cycling and certainly not dual purpose.
